Let there be Joy
Joy, after her fellow Red Velvet member Wendy, has become the second member of the group to have her solo debut. On May 31, Joy released her first solo album “Hello” and for that, held an online listening session to commemorate that.
Hello is the first solo album from Wendy since her debut seven years ago as a member of Red Velvet. This album is made up of remixes of several masterpieces from the 90s and 00s.
Joy explained that, saying she got a lot of love from the audience when she sang other remake songs in the past and was told that her voice went well with songs from the past. She said yes when the company asked whether she wanted to have her first solo album as a remake album.
Having a theme for the album was one thing, but picking songs for the album was another thing. As Joy talked about the difficulties behind it.
“Picking songs was a difficult task. Picking songs that could be connected was not easy, plus there was the issue of copyright. It is not like I could just pink the songs I wanted to sing. Luckily, we came up with a list of songs with the artists and repertoire team and also I received permissions to sing the songs I wanted to sing from those senior singers. Thus, we got a good tracklist.
“From the album, you can meet and feel the 6 remakes of masterpieces released in the 90s and 00s with my emotions. Those are also songs I like to sing personally, and it is my honor to remake those, and I am very grateful to those seniors who allowed me to remake their songs.
“Since those are all masterpieces and good songs, first and for most is not to erase the emotions of the originals, and with that, adding my own emotions and voice into them.
“For our age, it is not easy to know about songs from the 20s, however, we sang a lot of those songs when we were trainees as our training songs. There were songs I heard for the first time, and in the process of picking songs for this album, I listened to so many songs and they were all good. They were really my cup of tea.
“Doing a remake album makes me think more about songs from the past. Producer Lee Sooman told me that it is good to sing songs that could be echoed by different generations, and songs from the 00s are exactly that. That’s why most of the songs I picked were mostly from the 00s. I even wanted to be born and lived in that time. I looked at a lot of materials such as movies. I like it because it has a softness, pureness and charm in it.”
Joy, in the session, talked about the reasons behind picking Hello from singer Park Heykyoung as the title songs.
“When I first listened to the song, it was a bright and exciting song, but I felt like I was going to cry for no reason. Although the melody is refreshing and the lyrics are full of hope, it also comforted me and made me cry inside. I told my company I want to come back with this song and persuaded them proactively, and Hello has the meaning of introducing myself.”
In the end, Joy talked about her multiple endeavours as a member of Red Velvet, solo vocalist, actress and MC.
“I want to do everything when I don’t dig deep, but when I dig deep, I want to do them right. I have changed my mindset a lot, rather than go challenge something new, I am now more into focusing on things I am doing right now.”
