The red sauce Jimin had
Anything related to BTS would become an instant hit, and it includes food ingredients.
According to a news article from Chosun Daily, the export of gochujang, or red chili paste, has raised 63% in the last four years.
It all started from a photo in 2019 seeing Jimin having tteokbokki, or simmered rice cake, in a street food stall. It caught the internet’s attention as foreign netizens were curious about the food that Jimin was so into. And later when they found out it was the Korean traditional spicy street food tteokbokki, the food itself and main of the main ingredients, gochujang has captured netizens, in particular, ARMY’s interest.
And combining with the popularity of other Korean content, such as dramas and movies, in general, the demand for Korean food has kept increasing internationally. For example, exports of gochujang and doenjang, a type of fermented bean paste, have increased, in the last four years, 63% and 45%, respectively.
And we can also get some insights from the countries of export, as the top 5 export destinations are the US, China, Japan, the Philippines, and Canada as these countries reside some of the most prolific K-content consumers in the world. For instance, there were obviously some reasons behind the decision of BTS to hold their first live concerts in two years in the US. In a practical sense, the US might be the only place in the world BTS would hold a live concert; however, in a commercial sense, the market factor would also not be dismissed easily.
Lately, dramas such as Squid Game also feature Korean food such as the aforementioned tteokbokki, analysts suggest this will further drive up the interest and demand of Korean cuisine in the world.
